    • Why Do I Need a Carbon Monoxide Alarm?:

Carbon Monoxide is a silent killer. It resides in your home and is a colorless and odorless gas that leaves its victims feeling nauseous, dizzy, flu-like or tragically, dead. Having properly installed, working CO alarms can provide you the extra time needed to escape in the event of an emergency.

    • Where Does Carbon Monoxide Come From?:

Carbon monoxide (CO) is a byproduct of incomplete combustion. Common causes of carbon monoxide production can be gas or oil appliances like a furnace, clothes dryer, range, oven, water heater, or space heaters that are not working properly. In typical conditions, trace amounts of CO produced by these sources are typically not dangerous. However, there are common conditions that can cause CO levels to rise quickly:
      • Appliance malfunction, i.e. the heat exchanger on your furnace cracks.
      • Vent, flue, or chimney is blocked by debris or even snow.
      • Fireplace, wood burning stove, charcoal grill or other source of burning material is not properly vented.
      • Vehicle is left running in an attached garage and carbon monoxide seeps into the house.
      • Several appliances running at the same time and competing for limited fresh air can be a cause of carbon monoxide build-up.

    • What Type of CO Alarm Do I Need?:

First Alert offers a variety of CO alarms so you can customize your home’s safety. Our alarms range from battery powered units for easy placement, to plug-in with battery back up models that provide constant protection even during power outages. Some models feature a digital display and some even combine smoke and CO detection in a single unit for more complete protection. Whichever alarm you choose, know that each CO alarm we make has undergone rigorous testing through every level of production to build a better and more reliable product.

    • Where Should I Place My CO Alarm?:

First Alert recommends CO alarms where CO is shown in blue on our house map. The number of alarms you need depends on the size and layout of your home. It is recommended by fire departments and other safety experts to have a CO alarm on every level of the home and inside or near each sleeping area. Be sure to place your CO alarms at least 15 feet away from the furnace or fuel burning appliances and areas that create high humidity such as a shower or bath. Basements should include a CO alarm as well.

    • How Likely is it That I Will Have a CO Leak?:

Carbon monoxide poisoning is the most common form of accidental poisoning deaths in America. The Center for Disease Control states that CO poisoning claims nearly 500 lives each year in the U.S. along with thousands of emergency room treatments.
Because of your home’s fuel burning appliances, there is always a possibility of a CO leak to occur.
The risk increases if you have an attached garage, which is home to many fuel burning machines.
