Andersen® Lineal Length Trim Application Guide Brick Mould - Patio Door

  • Introduction

    • Patio door must be properly flashed prior to exterior trim application.

    • Andersen® exterior trim system does not provide structural support or function as a water management component.

    • Andersen exterior trim is not intended for use on non Andersen products.

  • Parts and Supplies

    Parts Included:
    • Instruction Guide
    • 13' Brick Mould Lineal

    Additional Andersen Parts Required:
    • Drip Cap
    • Attachment Strip
    • Brick Mould End Caps (left and right)
    • Brick Mould Corner Key (one per miter)
    • Brick Mould Lineals as Required
    • Screw Pack (three sided brick mould)
              • #8-15 x 2-1/2" Screw (two per miter)
              • #8-15 x 1/2" Screw (one per end cap)

    Tools Required:

    • Compound Miter Saw
    • 3/16" Drill Bit
    • 1/4" Drill Bit
    • Caulk Gun

    • Countersink Drill Bit

    Supplies Required:
    • Flashing
    • Sealant
    • Backer Rod
    • House Wrap Tape
    • Deck Screws (see installation guide)

  • For Existing or New Construction

    For existing patio doors, begin at Step 4: Remove Old Flashing. For new construction projects, proceed to Step 5: Replace Flashing.

  • Remove Old Flashing

    • Patio door must be properly flashed prior to exterior trim application.

    • Fold top flap of house wrap up.

    • Remove top flashing and discard.

    • Remove drip cap and discard.

  • Replace Flashing

    • If haven't already, fold top flap of house wrap up (new construction).

    • Remove sealant at top.

    • Extend top flap cuts; raise and retape house wrap.

    • Apply new top flashing, overlapping side flashing.

  • Measure & Cut

    • Measure width of patio door.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • Cut top lineal brick mould to width plus 3-1/2" using compound miter saw.

    • Cut each end at 45°.

    • Measure height of patio door.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • Cut the side lineal brick mould pieces to length plus 1-3/8" using compound miter saw.

    • Make a 45° cut at the top and a straight cut at the bottom.

  • Assemble Brick Mould Frame

    • On top lineal brick mould casing drill a 3/16" hole on both ends as shown.

    • On each mitered end of the side brick mould casing drill a 3/16" hole as shown.

    • Position end caps into the bottom end of the side brick mould.

    • Fasten caps with #8 x 1/2" screws.

    • Insert corner keys into the top mitered corners.

    • Align corner keys with side brick mould.

    • Slide together to form the brick mould frame.

    • Fasten side and top brick mould using #8 x 2-1/2" screws.

  • Cut Attachment Strips

    Cut attachment strips for the top and sides of the patio door. Cut each attachment strip 3" shorter than the patio door height or width.

  • Fasten Attachment Strips

    Andersen® 400 Series and 200 Series Gliding Patio Door Top Flange Only

    • Cut attachment strip leg at the scribe line for the top flange only.

    • Center attachment strips tight against patio door at sides and head; fasten at each end and every other hole.

  • Complete Installation

    • Position brick mould frame around patio door and push firmly into place.

    • Apply sealant at top only; quickly go to next step.

    • Place drip cap (full width) in sealant, centering over patio door.

    • Apply flashing over drip cap leg, overlapping side flashing.

    • Fold house wrap down and tape.

  • Leave Gap

    • Leave 1/4" gap between siding/stucco/brick and brick mould for sealing.

  • Seal Exterior

    • Insert backer rod on both sides.

    • Apply sealant to both sides.

    • Your installation of Andersen exterior trim is now complete.

    • Sillnose End Cap (left and right for three sided sided brick mould with sillnose)
    • Sillnose Lineal (three sided sided brick mould with sillnose)
    • Screw Pack (three sided sided brick mould with sillnose)
              • #8-15 x 2-1/2" Screw (two per corner)
              • #8-15 x 1/2" Screw (one per end cap)
    OR
              • Screw Pack (four sided brick mould)
              • #8-15 x 2-1/2" Screw (two per miter)

  • Remove and Replace Old Flashing

    For existing Andersen Windows, continue on with this step. For new construction or full frame Andersen projects, proceed to Step 4: Install New Flashing.

    • Fold top flap of house wrap up.

    • Remove top flashing and discard.

    • Remove drip cap and discard.

    • Remove sealant at top.

    • Extend top flap cuts; raise and retape house wrap.

  • Install New Flashing

    • If haven't already, fold top flap of house wrap up (new construction).

    • Apply new top flashing, overlapping side flashing.

  • Choose Corner Option

    Choose brick mould corner option:
    • Mitered
    • Flush
    • Extended

  • Measure Width

    • Measure width of window.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • For 4 Mitered Corners, cut top and bottom lineal brick mould to width plus 3-1/2" using miter saw. Cut each end at 45°.

    • If using a sillnose, square cut to width plus 3-3/8" for flush corners or width plus 5-3/8" for 1" extended corners.

    • Drill weep holes in bottom sillnose 6" from each end. One on top inside edge through 1 wall, second on bottom outside edge through both walls.

    OR
    • Drill weep holes in bottom miter brick mould 7-3/4" from end, drilling straight through.

  • Measure Height, Cut Miters

    • Measure height of window.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    For Brick Mould with Sillnose applications:
    • Cut to window height plus 1-15/16" as shown.

    For Brick Mould on Four Sides applications:
    • Cut to window height plus 3-1/2" as shown.

  • Prepare Corners For Fastening

    For Brick Mould with Sillnose (Extended or Flush) applications:
    • Position end caps into sillnose and fasten.

    • Drill 3/16" holes through each end of mitered brick mould / sillnose as shown.

  • Assemble Grid

    • Position corner keys into the brick mould mitered corners.

    • Align corner keys with side brick mould and slide together.

    • Fasten top brick mould and bottom sillnose / brick mould to sides.

  • Cut Attachment Strips

    • Cut attachment strips 3" shorter than window height and width.

  • Secure Attachment Strips

    Attachment Strips:
    All Andersen® A-Series, 400 Series Casement, Awning, Gliding and 200 Series Tilt-Wash Double-Hung Windows Only

    • Center attachment strips tight against installation flange on all 4 sides; fasten at each end and every other hole

    Attachment Strips:
    400 Series Woodwright®, Tilt-Wash Double-Hung, Double-Hung Picture and 200 Series Narroline® Double-Hung Windows Only

    • Center attachment strips tight against window at sides and head; fasten at each end and every other hole.

    • Center attachment strip flush with lowest part of sill and fasten at each end and every other hole.

  • Apply Sealant & Trim

    Brick Mould Bottom Only:
    • Apply sealant to lip of bottom brick mould only.

    • Apply sealant bead under sill full width.

  • Place Trim

    • Position trim around window and push firmly into place.

  • Install Drip Cap

     • Apply sealant at top only; quickly go to next step.

    • Place drip cap (full width) in sealant, centering over window.

    • Apply flashing over drip cap leg overlapping side flashing.

    • Fold house wrap down and tape.

  • Gap for Sealing

    • Leave gap between siding/stucco/brick and exterior trim for sealing.

    • Siding & Stucco: 1/4" at Head/Side/Sill.

    • Brick: 1/4" at Head/Side; 1/2" at Sill.

    • Refer to installation guide for more detail.

  • Seal Exterior

    • Insert backer rod on both sides and bottom.

    • Apply sealant to both sides and bottom.

    • Your installation of Andersen exterior trim is now complete.

  • Measure Width

    • Measure width of patio door.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • Square cut one end of top trim lineal.

    • For 3-1/2" trim:
    - Add 6-5/16" to width for flush corners.
    - Add 8-5/16" to width for 1" extended corners.

    • For 4-1/2" trim:
    - Add 8-5/16" to width for flush corners.
    - Add 10-5/16" to width for 1" extended corners.

  • Measure Height

    • Measure height of patio door.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • Cut side trim to length, minus 5/8".

  • Modify, Install Side End Caps

    • Modify end caps for the bottom of side trim.

    • Snap apart or cut along the break line.

    • Press the end caps into side trim.

    • Fasten using #8 x 1/2" screws.

  • Modify, Install Corner End Caps

    • Modify end caps for top trim piece for flush corner or extended corner trim styles.

  • Install Top Trim End Caps

    • Slide end caps into top flat trim and fasten.

    • Fasten using #8 x 1/2" screws.

    On each end of top flat trim:
    • Drill two 3/16" holes at a 30° angle.

    • See the installation guide for specific drill location.

    Important: Outside hole is skinned over.

  • Assemble Trim Grid

    • Lay out trim pieces.

    • Align the end cap tabs with side flat trim.

    • Slide pieces together.

    • Fasten top flat trim to sides with 1-1/4" screws.

    Caution: Do not over drive screws. Product damage may result.

  • Cut Attachment Strips

    • Cut attachment strips for the top and sides of the patio door. Cut each attachment strip 3" shorter than the patio door height or width.

  • Fasten Attachment Strips

    Andersen® 400 Series and 200 Series Gliding Patio Door Top Flange Only

    • Cut attachment strip at the scribe line, for the top flange only.

    • Center attachment strips tight against patio door at sides and head; fasten at each end and every other hole.

  • Place Drip Cap, Flashing

    • Position trim around patio door and push firmly into place.

    • Apply sealant at top only; quickly go to next step.

    • Place drip cap (full width) in sealant, centering over patio door.

    • Apply flashing over drip cap leg, overlapping side flashing.

    • Fold house wrap down and tape.

  • Leave Gap

    • Leave 1/4" gap between siding/stucco/brick and exterior trim for sealing.

    • Refer to installation guide for more detail.

  • Seal Exterior

    • Insert backer rod on both sides.

    • Apply sealant to both sides.

    • Your installation of Andersen exterior trim is now complete.

  • Remove and Replace Old Flashing

    For existing Andersen Windows, continue on with this step. For new construction or full frame Andersen projects, proceed to Step 4: Install New Flashing.

    • Remove top flashing and discard.

    • Remove drip cap and discard.

    • Remove sealant at top.

    • Extend top flap cuts; raise and retape house wrap.

  • Install New Flashing

    • Apply new top flashing, overlapping side flashing.

  • Choose Corner Option

    Choose finished exterior trim corner option:

    • Flush with or without sillnose.

    • Extended with or without sillnose.

  • Measure Width, Drill Weep Holes

    • Measure width of window.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • Square cut one end.

    • For flush corners add
    6-5/16" to width.

    • For 1" extended corners add 8-5/16" to width.

    Drill 1/4" weep holes:
    • For bottom sillnose: Drill weep holes 6" from each outer end; one on top inside edge through 1 wall, second on bottom outside edge through both walls.

    • For bottom flat trim : Drill weep holes 6" from each outer end.

  • Measure Height

    • Measure height of window.

    • Round up to 1/16".

    • For sillnose applications, flat trim on three sides, cut to window height minus 3/16" as shown.

    • For flat trim on all four sides, cut to window height minus 1/2" as shown.

  • Modify End Caps

    • Modify the flat end caps for flush corner or extended corner trim styles.

  • Install End Caps

    • Press the end caps into the top and/or bottom flat trim or sillnose.

    • Fasten using #8 x 1/2" screws.

  • Drill Through End Caps

    Prep the trim for assembly:
    • For sillnose applications, drill two 3/16" holes on each end of the sillnose.

    • Using a countersink bit, countersink to an appropriate depth of screw head.

    On each end of top and bottom flat trim:
    • Drill two 3/16" holes at a 30° angle.

    • See the installation guide for specific drill location.

    Important: Outside hole is skinned over.

  • Assemble Trim Grid

    • Lay out trim pieces.

    • Align the top flat trim end cap tabs with side flat trim.

    • If using flat trim on four sides, align bottom flat trim end cap tabs with side flat trim.

    • Slide pieces together.

    • Fasten the top flat trim and then fasten the bottom flat trim or sillnose to sides as shown.

  • Cut Attachment Strips

    • Cut attachment strips 3" shorter than window height and width.

  • Secure Attachment Strips

    Attachment Strips:
    All Andersen® A-Series, 400 Series Casement, Awning, Gliding and 200 Series Tilt-Wash Double-Hung Windows Only

  • Gap for Sealing

    • Leave gap between siding/stucco/brick and exterior trim for sealing.

    • Siding & Stucco: 1/4" at Head/Side/Sill.

    • Brick: 1/4" at Head/Side; 1/2" at Sill.

    • Refer to installation guide for more detail.

  • Seal Exterior

    • Insert backer rod on both sides and bottom.

    • Apply sealant to both sides and bottom.
