Oldcastle Countryside Wall Instructions

  • Welcome!

How to Build a Retaining Wall in 6 easy steps.

  • Step 1

    Installing a Retaining Wall
    * Retaining Wall can add aesthetic appeal to your home.
    * Most Retaining Wall Projects can be completed in one day.

    Safety First
    * Calling the Utility Companies is a Necessary Safety Measure
    * Utility companies check for all underground lines and pipes to ensure your safety.

  • Step 2

    * Use Spray Paint to mark a line to help guide you in your excavation.
    * Tools Needed - Spray Paint and Shovels.

    * Excavating a 5" Depth is the minimum amount.
    * The Deeper the Paver Base, the more stable your wall will be.
    * The trench should be 4" wider than your Retaining Wall Block.
    * Tools Needed - Tape Measure.

  • Step 3

    Paver Base
    * It's important the Paver Base is compacted to ensure the integrity of the wall.
    * Tools Needed - Shovel and Hand Tamper.

    Leveling Sand
    * Lay the Sand out in 10-15 foot increments to help keep the sand as level as possible.

  • Step 4

    Starting Point
    * Always start the Wall on the lowest elevation side of the trench, not in the middle.

    Remove Lip
    * Since the Countryside Wall doesn't have a lip, you do not need to worry about this step.  However, if you want to cut your block, you will need to score it along the top and bottom of the block, and continue on that line until the block breaks apart.  You can also use a Tile Saw, or a Masonry blade in a circular saw to acheieve the same cut.

    * Tools Needed - Safety Glasses, 2lb Hammer, Masonry Chisel.

  • Step 5

    Installing 1st Wall Block
    * Install the Wall, ensuring it is flat.
    * Level the Wall from all angles to ensure stability of the wall.
    * Tools Needed - Level and Rubber Mallet.

    Installing 2nd Wall Block
    * You must level the Retaining Wall blocks with the ones that it touches.
    * This ensures your entire wall will be level.
    * Tools Needed - Level and Rubber Mallet.

    Continue Installing Next Levels
    * Use a Large Level every 5 feet to make sure you are staying on a level course.
    * Offsetting the joints helps keep the wall from falling over.
    * Tools Needed - Level and Rubber Mallet.

  • Step 6

    * Backfilling the Wall keeps the wall integrally sound.
    * Tools Needed - Shovels.

    Cutting a Retaining Wall
    * Anytime you cut a block, always remember to have your Safety Glasses on!
    * Tools Needed - Safety Glasses, 2lb Hammer, and a Masonry Chisel.

    Securing Top Level
    * Caulk is vital to the walls integrity, and must be used between the top 2 courses.

  • Enjoy your new Wall!

An easy project you can complete in one weekend.
